2011 SFCC Photography Student Portfolio Review

SFCC hosted its annual student portfolio review. Twenty-nine 5th & 6th quarter students presented their work to 14 professional photographers. Data is collected from each review that is incorporated into our annual program assessment.

The reviewers represented a who's who of Spokane area photographers. Here is a list of participants:

Tony Boccaccio

Tony is a former National Geographic staff photographer who has photographed on assignments all over the world. He is represented by Getty Images and has spent the last 40 years documenting the impact of mining and development on the Amazon forest in Brazil.

Ifong Chen

Ifong is a wedding photojournalist who is one of the most sought after wedding photographers in Spokane. She is also a recent alumni from SFCC.

Jed Conklin

Jed is a photojournalist who travels internationally on assignments as well as shooting commercial advertising for adventure sport manufacturers.

Dean Davis

Dean is a highly successful commercial photographer and fine artist as well as a past-president of the Spokane Ad Federation.

Rich Heinzen

Rich has been a highly successful tock and commercial photographer for more than 40 years. He is represented by Super Stock out of Florida and makes his home in Bayview Idaho.

John Mark

John is president of Dorian Photography studios. Dorian provides school photography and yearbook services in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, and Arizona.

Colin Mulvany

Colin is a is a multimedia producer and staff photographer at The Spokesman-Review, a 100,000-circulation newspaper that covers eastern Washington and North Idaho. He is also nationally recognized teacher of multimedia journalism for the National Press Photographers Association and the Knight Media Foundation.

Matt Norbut

Matt is a HD Video producer for Magnus films. Matt has worked on national Campaigns for companies such as Microsoft, Xbox and the American Heart Association. He creates documentaries, commercials, and corporate vides for web and broadcast.

Tony Roslund

Tony is a 3^rd generation photographer specializing in product and advertising photography. Roslund Photography is a family owned business with studios in Boca Raton, San Diego and Spokane.

Megan Schuyler

Megan works as a producer and editor for the non-fiction division of North by Northwest Productions. She also also started GryffinClaw Productions LLC, to produce a feature-length documentary "The Wizard Rockumentary," about Harry Potter fans and Wizard Rock musicians.

Jen Scott

Jen is a fine Art photographer who exhibits regionally and received her MFA from Washington State University. She has taught as an adjunct professor at WSU and Eastern Washington University. She works in mixed media and creates photographs with a strong personal narrative.

Rick Singer

Rick is a Brooks Institute of Photography graduate and successful portrait photographer for more than 30 years. He specializes in natural light photography and has two major exhibitions of portraits of artists and musicians that have been collected by the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture.

Craig Sweat

Craig is a SFCC Alumni and successful corporate and advertising photographer who has been in business for more than 25 years. He is chair of the SFCC Photography Industry Advisory Committee and has been a guest lecturer on how photography affects marketing and advertising.

Bill Winter

Bill is a premier portrait photographer who shoots weddings nationally and internationally. He owns and operates Summit photography and has recently become teacher at the After Dark workshops.

JOURN 225: Multimedia Journalism

The course is coming together nicely, on schedule for the Winter 2010 rollout. Students will get some experience with non-linear editing, narrated and non-narrated audio documentaries, and working as an editor with a reporter. The latter will be a unique feature of this course, one that will give students a completely different perspective. We're toying with the idea of having them post their pieces directly to a blog and completing a multimedia portfolio.

Since this is the first time teaching this course, there will be some adjustment to see what we can realistically expect to pull off during the time allotted. Stay tuned.

SFCC faculty designs award winning image

SFCC Graphic Design instructor Greg Stiles was the art director for this image "New American Pie" that was made in collaboration with Spokane photographer Dean Davis. The pair won local and regional "Addy" awards from the Advertising Federation. Dean Davis is currently traveling to Washington D.C. this week to attend the national Ad Fed conference where this image is under consideration for a national Addy award.

This image was also selected by PRINT magazine as a Regional winner (out of nearly 5,000 entries) in their 2009 Regional Design Annual.

BLM Office donates Cameras to SFCC Photography

SFCC Photography received a donation of ten 35mm film cameras from the Spokane district office of the Bureau of Land Management. This donation will make it much easier for students who already own digital cameras because they will not have to buy another film camera while taking the intro to photography class that still uses black and white film to teach the history and fundamentals of photography. In fact, black and white film photography is experiencing a renaissance in popularity and every major film process since the invention of photography is still practiced today.

Local Photographers Help Out!

Local nature and landscape photographers stepped in to help with this Spring's class after instructor Rodger Hartman suffered a heart attack. Alice Garland, John Latta, Charles Gurche, and John Dean each made presentations during the month of May. Photographer Joe Nuess has taken over teaching the class while Rodger recovers and is taking the students on an overnight field trip to the Bison Range in Montana. THANK YOU!

Society of Photgaphic Educators Northwest Meet

Ira Gardner attended the SPE Northwest meeting held May 16th at Seattle Central Community College. Faculty from regional colleges and high schools are planning a November conference and student portfolio review as well as future plans for articulation between institutions.

The committee also discussed plans for future events to be held in Spokane at SFCC.

Graphic Design hosts Maggie MacNab

The SFCC Graphic Design club sponsored author Maggie MacNab recently for a campus presentation. MacNab is a graphic designer based out of New Mexico who has won national addy awards and has been featured in publications such as HOW and Communication arts. Graphic Design Program Hosts Society of Illustrators Traveling Exhibit

The SFCC Graphic Design program is hosting the 2009 Society of Illustrators traveling exhibition. There are 40 works representing the best out of six categories (equential, Editorial, Book, Advertising, Institutional and Uncommissioned) that were awarded at the 50th annual competition.

The work is being displayed in the building 19 computer labs.

SFCC Video Production Airs on Cable Channel 14

SFCC Photography students filmed a lecture given by holocaust survivor Peter Metzelaar on March 12th, 2009 at the SCC Hagan Center for the Humanities.

SFCC Photography has begun a partnership with Community Minded Television to provide programming produced by students. Stories among us will air on Monday May 11^th at 5pm, Wednesday the 13^th at 7:30pm and again on Thursday at 5:00pm.

SFCC Students are also providing CMTV with videos of Winona LaDuke's recent lecture, the Spokane Get Lit Teen Poetry Slam, Armenian Genocide Rememberence Day lecture, and the Intertribal Salish Language Conference.

AVA Connections Event

The Applied Visual Arts Department hosted over 400 regional high school students for the 2009 "Connections" event that showcases all of the department programs and gives students the opportunity to visit our campus and meet faculty and industry representatives. Students met in the Music Auditorium for morning sessions and broke for lunch and campus tours in the afternoon.

SFCC Mascot "Skitch" greets high school students outside the auditorium.

This year's program included the addition of the Journalism program along with Interior Design, Graphic Design, Web Design, and Photography.

Ira Gardner served as MC and faculty presenters included Tanja Huffman, John Smith, and Jason Nix. Doug Crabtree and Greg Stiles assisted as well.

Spokane Area Professional Technical Advisory Consortium

Ira Gardner attended the Spokane Area Professional Technical Advisory Committee (SAP-TAC) that was held at the Spokane Skills Center on March 24th. Ira is a member of the advisory committee that supports photography, video, multimedia, and graphic design programs at the High School level. Industry reps include film director and producer Juan Mas, Michael Pickering from Hamilton Photography and Film, as well as Dan Pelle from the Spokesman Review. Terri Hayworth from the Skills Center is the chair of the committee.

During today's meeting Juan Mas introduced a proposal for a area wide documentary photography and film contest and education summit that will be sponsored in part by the Museum of Arts and Culture as well as local film production companies. Students will be awarded scholarships to attend local colleges (including SFCC!) to study photography and film. SFCC Photography has offered to host the education summit in May. More details to come.

Photography Instructor Rodger Hartman and the PSA (Photographic Society of America) Inland Empire chapter is hosting the annual seminar for the Northwest region (Washington, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia and Alberta, Canada) HERE ON THE SFCC CAMPUS ON SATURDAY MARCH 28.

The Featured presenter is Frans Lanting one of the Greatest Nature Photographers of our time. His influential work appears in Books, Magazines, and exhibitions around the world. For more than two decades he has documented wildlife and our relationship with nature and the Environment from the Amazon to Antarctica. He has served as a Photographer in Residence for the National Geographic.

The Communicator Online, SFCC's student-run news website, has been named one of six finalists in its category for the 2009 Online Pacemaker Awards.

For those of you who have never been to the site, it is the web division of The Communicator, SFCC's student-run newspaper. The award itself, The Pacemaker, is known as the college equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. Neither The Communicator nor The Communicator Online have ever won or placed in the finals for the prestigious honor.

The Communicator Online is also joined by The Jibsheet, the student news site from Bellevue Community College, and in the four year category, The Whitworthian, from Whitworth University.

This finalist position comes after the total revamp and redesign of the website. Editor-in-Chief Madison McCord, Graphics Editor Marshall Moore and Perspectives Editor Judy Johnson spent many hours tediously rebuilding the site to make it more viewer-friendly and accessible.

Graphic Design Students Win Addys!

SFCC Graphic Design students won Gold & Silver awards at the 2009 Spokane Advertising Federation Addy Awards. Graphic Design instructor Greg Stiles collaborated with photography instructor Erik Sohner to create photographs for the submissions. SFCC students also received the Toni Robideaux scholarship.

Fine Arts & Photography Field Trip

Fine Arts faculty member Tom O'Day extended an invitation to SFCC Photography students to join the art program for a field trip to the WSU fine art gallery in pullman where the exhibit "Running the Numbers" by photographer Chris Jordan is on display until April 4th.

Students and faculty were escorted by bus and enjoyed a hosted lunch and tour of the entire WSU art program.

Here is a short video on SFCC Music Instructor Danny McCollim. Students in the Photo 237 Intro to Documentary Video Production class used three cameras to film the performance and interview. If you are willing to participate as the subject for a short documentary video during Spring quarter or you know of an interesting student that would be willing to participate, please let Ira Gardner know by email before March 26th. The video class would like to highlight the talents of SFCC students and faculty.

Photo Faculty and Students Attend Photography Convention & Tradeshow

Photography instructors Rodger Hartman and Ira Gardner attended the 2009 Professional Photographers of Idaho Convention at the Coeur d' Alene resort as part of a class field trip. SFCC students were granted a free day pass to attend a 3 hour workshop presented by internationally known photographer and PhotoShop guru Eddie Tapp as well as admission to the trade show where vendors are presenting the latest in studio equipment and presentation techniques.

Among the professional photographers in attendance were recent SFCC graduates Nick Alexander (Big Picture Studios) and Ben Norwood (Quicksilver Studios) who have become established professional over the course of the last five years and have been recognized for the quality of their work in this years print competition.

Community TV forms Film & Video Society

On March 3rd, Ira Gardner attended the inaugural gathering of a new Spokane area film and video organization. The meeting was held in the Community Building offices of Community Minded Television. The group is part of a grass roots effort by Community Minded Television (cable channel 14) to bring together amateur and professional filmmakers as well as regional educators for the purposes of providing networking, education, and production distribution in support of local filmmakers ranging from shool age children to retired seniors.

Tuesday's meeting included several former SFCC photography students including one who works for CMTV and several representatives from EWU, North by Northwest, as well as members ffrom the Kootenai North Idaho Videographers group that are looking to join as an affiliated member.

The group will meet monthly and has formed a steering committee that will help define the scope and mission of the new group. Ira will serve on this committee and is forging a relationship with CMTV that will bring student productions to the public airwaves starting Spring Quarter.

Rodger Hartman Photography Exhibition

Photography instructor Rodger Hartman is exhibiting work from a recent trip to Alaska downtown at the Brick Wall Art Gallery which is located in the skywalk level of the Bennett Block building above Rocky Roccoco Pizza. Rodger spent 4 weeks this past summer on a photo safari with a group of regional photographers. Please join him for the First Friday art walk on March 6th.

New Department Blog Goes Online

After years of discussing the need for better inter-department communication a new blog has been created to share department information. This blog fulfills a strategic plan initiative and will give the department faculty the opportunity to highlight what's happening within their programs. The new blog enables faculty to upload photos and videos along with their news items.

SFCC Photography students film Danny McCollim

Ira Gardner and a group of students enrolled in the Intro to Documentary Video Production course arranged to film SFCC music instructor Danny McCollim performing in the auditorium. Danny has been playing the piano for 50 years and is one of Spokane's most respected jazz pianist. It was a great opportunity for students to learn how to sync three cameras together. SFCC Graphic Design Hosts Addy Award Judging

SFCC Graphic Design helped the Spokane Ad Federation judge this years Addy Awards Submission. Among the submission are SFCC student projects. Graphic design students routinely win awards in the student category as well as scholarship awards sponsored by the AdFed. Greg Stiles and photography instructor Erik Sohner collaborated in the fall to create photo submissions for student work. We'll post the winners later this spring.

Northwest Photo Educators Meet in Seattle

Photography instructor Ira Gardner traveled to Seattle February 23rd to meet with high school and college photography educators from all over the state of Washington. 40 instructors gathered at Seattle Central Community College where this event was hosted by SCCC photography instructor (and former SFCC faculty member) Alejandro Tomas.

The focus of the event was the establishment of new pathways for students to matriculate from high school to grad school. Articulation agreements were discussed and the group has agreed to pursue the creation of a region wide college fair for high school students.

We have entered a new era of cooperation between prof/tech community college programs and fine arts baccalaureate institutions. Among the colleges represented at the event were: University of Washington, Seattle University, Central Washington University, Art Institute of Seattle, and the Cornish College of Fine Arts.

One interesting statistic from this event was the fact that every baccalaureate institution in attendance are maintaining wet chemistry darkrooms and feel strongly that black and white film photography is still viable in the digital era.

Journalism Pitches New SFCC Multimedia Center

Journalism instructor Jason Nix recently made two presentations about a $120,000 proposed multimedia work center. Jason spoke to the CCS Board as part of their "celebrating success" presentation where Jason was able to highlight recent national awards the SFCC Communicator has earned and pitch the idea of a new multimedia center designed to incorporate print production, podcasting, and video production.

Jason also presented the idea to the SFCC Student Council last week in an effort to get part of the expected $600,000 budget surplus students have accumulated. If the proposal is adopted, the plan is to remodel 19-119 when the Audio Technology program moves to their new facilities as soon as the Music building remodel is complete. The plan is to have a production center that is inter-disciplinary and mirrors current media production work environments.

Graphic Design Program - H.S. Articulation

Graphic design instructors Greg Stiles and Doug Crabtree met with regional high school instructors on February 25th in support of articulation programs between SFCC and Spokane Public Schools. SFCC has an ongoing commitment to work with regional high schools to ensure students are receiving comparable educations to on campus coursework as well as making the transition as smooth as possible for those students who choose to enroll in the Graphic Design program after high school.

Tech Fee Funds Filemaker Pro Update

Computer Support recently ordered FileMaker Pro 10 Server and 5 copies of the FileMaker applications in support of the upgrade of the photography program's equipment checkout system and web curriculum database. Ira Gardner will be installing the server software on the SFCC-GD-2 server and will be coordinating the updating of the the old databases to the new format. The project will be completed during Spring quarter and will be fully operational by years end..

The SFCC Photography curriculum web database was the first online database developed at SFCC by Ira Gardner back in 1998 and has been in continuous operation since that time. The system includes a complete student management system including class rosters and grading as well as student web access to assignments and other resource links.

The new system will be made available for any AVA faculty member interested in using it and will feature a web browser interface that will make it easier for faculty and students from any AVA program to reserve equipment as needed. This project will fulfill a department strategic plan item that has been on the books for more than three years.

Future projects may include developing databases for data driven sites developed in the Web Design and Journalism program.
